SPEARFISHING
BIG GAME
Spearfishing with triggerless gear presents additional challenges when targeting large species: reaching the range to hit wary fish, penetrating through a tough-bodied fish, maintaining the holding power of your shot, and the durability of your equipment to resist a fish that fights. A polespear that can deliver the right balance of speed and force is essential to successful catches.
With this in mind, we developed the NOMAD Polespear to solve these challenges. Using a proprietary composite layup, we designed a tube that offers appropriate shot speed with incredible durability. The NOMAD has enough mass to offer good kinetic energy and penetration while still maintaining enough speed to not feel like the spear is slow. We also engineered enough flexibility in the spear to absorb the forces and impact that a large fish can inflict on a pole spear.
We recommend the NOMAD Polespear for large fish, including:
- Grouper - Cubera Snapper - African Pompano - Permit - Cobia - Mackerel - Trevally - Cod - Sea Bass - Halibut - Dogtooth Tuna - etc.
WHAT TO KNOW
THE CHALLENGES OF SHOOTING LARGE FISH
The Predator Polespear was our original spear design; while it is incredible for common reef fish under 20lbs, it doesn't have the mass to penetrate a large fish with tough scales. Fish such as big grouper and Cubera snapper need to be shot harder and deeper in order to effectively land them. Not only do they need to be hit with more mass, but the gear needs to survive the ensuing battle. Putting a holding shot in a large fish is only half the battle.
- NOMAD construction delivers high impact holding shots
- NOMAD is durable enough to withstand fish that fight
- NOMAD is ideal choice for species of large fish over 20lbs
CHOOSE A NOMAD
When choosing a NOMAD, you're faced with two big decisions: roller vs. regular band, and length. The roller spear can be slightly more technical to set up and use but once set up, you gain more range on your shot and the spear wont bow when fully loaded. However, a roller spear doesn't accelerate as quickly as a regular band. A spear with a standard band has a snappier acceleration, and with fewer moving parts, is less expensive. In the end it is a matter of personal preference, although we see the roller becoming more and more popular.
When deciding on the length, we generally recommend a 9ft spear. The extra foot of range and band stretch is helpful in almost all situations. The only situation an 8fter might be recommended would be shooting fish in caves or diving in extremely murky water or difficult conditions where a longer spear is too challenging to maneuver. We also offer a 6ft version of the standard band. Due to the NOMAD's modular construction, any NOMAD can be turned into a 6ft spear by removing the mid section. This modular approach also helps with travel.

About Father's Day
Sonora Smart Dodd heard a sermon about Mother’s day in a church. After hearing the sermon, Sonara decided that there should be a day to show our love and respect towards fathers since her father had raised her and her five siblings after her mother passed away. Celebrating father’s day seemed a right way to honor her father.
NOMAD TIP OPTIONS
Every spear we sell comes completely rigged with an injector rod and WARHEAD cable slip tip. Over the years we've learned that our customers almost always prefer to have spare spear tips and injector rods in their gear bag. Injector rods are designed to bend before your spear does so they are the most likely part to need replacing after a fish battle. While it's hard to lose a spear tip, having a spare is very handy and can keep you in the water diving instead of in the boat trying to remove your slip tip from a fish.
All Headhunter polespears come rigged with a standard size WARHEAD slip tip with cable. However, we do offer both the standard tip and a larger Big Game Tip rigged with 1000 pound spectra. The spectra is more user-friendly than cable. Spectra is especially important if you're targeting softer fish such as mackerel or African Pompano because it wont saw through the fish like cable can. The WARHEAD Big Game Tip is an inch longer than the standard tip, and hand-sharpened. This tip provides extreme penetrating and holding power for the biggest fish.
- WARHEAD Cable Slip Tip comes standard with the NOMAD
- WARHEAD Spectra Slip Tip is best for sharky waters, and more manageable than cable; better for soft-bodied fish
- WARHEAD Big Game Slip Tip is best for big soft-bodied fish such as wahoo & large reef fish, rigged with 1000 pound spectra
- WARHEAD Injector Rod - we recommend keeping a spare for when big fish fight back
